The Beast from the East: A Gorilla’s Wedding

The Beast from the East: A Gorilla’s Wedding

In South Africa we call it a monkey’s wedding when it is raining and the sun is shining at the same time. During the recent snow in London, I looked out of the window to the sight of the sun shining as snow fell on the palm leaves outside. Obviously something more strong and expressive than “a monkey’s wedding” was needed.

Some cats enjoy being picked up, but others do not thrive on it. They will grace your lap or your shoulder with their presence at a time of their own choosing, as suits them. When picked up against their will, they will look uncomfortable or actively struggle.
New Tom

New Tom

They used to talk about New Man. I called Sutu New Tom because he was closer to his kittens than their mother was.

Pastel
14.5cm x 21.1cm

From the moment they were born, Sutu showed great interest in and loved his kittens. He was always playing with them or cuddled up with them. They adored him and even closer to him than their mother. After he was neutered, Dinka had two more litters in which he never showed the slightest interest. In his case the truism that male cats do not recognize their own kittens did not appear to be true.

In the intense Mediterranean light, from the darkness of an interior a pacing figure emerges sporadically to intensely draw on his cigarette. Is he rehearsing and practicing his lines? Preparing a brief? Worrying over a problem? He is lost deep in concentration. I will never know what it is about.
